I had the opportunity to provide annotations and xml encoding for two letters which acclaimed poet (and queer icon) Walt Whitman wrote to a newspaper called The Daily Crescent in 1848. I had done smaller XML encoding projects earlier in the semester, and I thoroughly enjoyed it for introducing me to both a new skillset and a new side of a prominent literary figure.

For this project, I first corrected and edited the transcription of the original document (which I think was originally transcribed by another graduate student at a different institution, and not OCR, but I may be remembering wrong). I then performed the XML encoding—which was made significantly easier by the Walt Whitman Archive’s XML template—and, after a few errors was able to get the file to validate (a great feeling). After the initial encoding, I researched and wrote a significant number of annotations, which I then added to the XML file. This assignment enabled me to put into action competency
